Winter has began at the Lystigarður with already a few weeks of ephemeral snow cover. The effect on the plants is clear to see, with many of the herbaceous perrenials retreating beyond the reach of the frost to the saftey of the soil. The resulting layer of abandoned leaves and stems plays an important role in insulating the plant as it hibernates beneath the ground.
Evergreen trees defiantly continue to grow in the winter owing to some unique adaptive features. The leaves of evergreen conifers are small, often coated with wax and able to survive harsh freezing temperatures without damage. Another strategy for the plant is to increasing salt and sugar levels in their fluids, creating an 'anti-freeze' which will protect exposed areas.
Dormant plants are very susceptible to physical damage which is why we request patrons to remain on the designated pathways throughout this period.
